How To Cover – Up an Old or Unwanted Tattoo

Let’s Look at your existing tattoo and decide what can be done?

How big is the original tattoo?

If the original tattoo is quite large and it is possible to cover it up, keep in mind that the cover up will be larger than the original tattoo itself. There is a reason for this. The size of the new design will take up more space because the old original size usually must be fully covered up. And to do this you need a larger area. It’s like a spot on a wall needs paint or a rust spot on your car, whenever a repair, or cover up gets done, it will always be larger than the original spot was. This is a fact. You need to go outside of the original tattoo area to blend it in so the new tattoo will look like it was there all along.

Example of a Very Good Cover-Up Pg 2.

As you have noticed the new tattoo is larger than the original in size and shape. The other positive aspect was that the original is faded and this gave me a better success rate for a good final product. The results are so good that you cannot even see the old tattoo. I picked flowers for this because of the length in size of the original tattoo and due to the fact that I could easily place several flowers in strategic points to get a good final product. This also made the new tattoo look like it was always there.

Example Of A Very Good Cover-Up

What color will cover up my tattoo?

A light color will not cover up a dark color. No matter what you do. This is another fact. Once the color is very dark, you can’t just cover it up with a lighter shade or lighter color of some other pigment. A dark tribal will remain dark for a long time. You can go from light to Dark, But, not dark to light.

So this means that you will have a better success rate when you cover up lighter colored tattoos or already faded tattoos. The success rate here is high compared to covering up a dark tribal tattoo like the one shown here.

This is an example of a large Tribal Tattoo

Picking A Good Tattoo Studio

If you really need a tattoo cover-up, consult a good tattoo shop with an experienced tattoo artist. Do not just take their word for it. Check the portfolios and look at the cover up jobs that artist has done. Remember that each artist has their own portfolios of work. The more complex the job, the artist should also be of higher caliber.

In closing, what tattoos get covered up a lot of the time?  Boyfriends and Girlfriends names and old unwanted and faded tattoos get covered up frequently. We have done many of these cover ups.

Thanks and hope this will help you decide what to do.

  1. The basis of what you went over makes a lot of common sense to me. I have always wondered? how do you do it or how do you come up with the right solution to the problem in front of you.

I suppose because the years of your experience really does show up in the final product. Your success is observable and this means a lot when you are trying to spread the Word. Your cover-up regarding this and other photos I have seen from your Studio are Amazing.
